About the book
Mental health is a condition of psychological maturity. It is a condition of personal and social functioning with a maximum of effectiveness and satisfaction. Mental health can immensely contribute to lowering one’s distress and help in effective day –to-day functioning. It promotes well-being wherein individuals would realize his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to her or his community/society. Thus the goals of mental health domain are related to the promotion of well-being, the prevention of mental disorders, and the treatment and rehabilitation of people affected by mental disorders. In view of the growing importance of mental health, 10 October is being observed as World Mental Health Day every year. The overall objective is raising awareness of mental health issues around the world and mobilizing efforts in support of mental health.
It is important to promote mental health in educational institutions among teachers, students and community involved directly or indirectly to these institutions. The most important individual in educational institutions are students. However, it is evident that they are also the victim of mental illnesses due to various factors like curriculum, demand of the time, family, friends and society, media etc. The incidence of suicide among students adds evidence that the mental health problems exist among students. In the present day context, involvement of students in various types of abuses including substance abuse, addiction which could be due to frustration and not being able to solve problems and day to day stresses of life. These concerns made us bring up a book on Mental Health Education.
