“Philip Phillips Advanced Solid State Physics provides an excellent combination of standard introductory material with modern topics of condensed matter research, Written in a style that focuses on the actual physical phenomenon rather than too much formalism, it offers a detailed insight into a broad spectrum of exciting well-selected topics. Both the student who wants to know why solid state physics is actually interesting as well as the researcher who is working on a related topic, will benefit from this well written book. For me it was a joyful experience to read it.”
-Joerg Schmalian, lawa State University
“For some time now, there has been a glaring lack of a textbook which explains the current direction of research in solid state physics at a level accessible to beginning graduate students. Advanced Solid State Physics fulfills this need and does so in a clear, concise, and self-contained way. I recommend it to anyone interested in learning about modern solid state physics.”
-Chetan Nayak, University of California, Los Angeles
“This book provides succinct coverage of important modern developments at an advanced but accessible level.
-Steven Girvin, Yale University
Solid state physics continues to be the fastest-growing sub-discipline in physics. This much anticipated new book provides amble background that underpins the principles of solid state physics, and moves quickly to an overview of current research in this fast-moving field. Upper division undergraduates and graduate students in physics who wish to pursue solid state physics research must master old topics, as well as problems of current interest.
PHILIP PHILLIPS received his bachelor’s degree in chemistry and mathematics from Walla College in 1979 and his Ph.D. in physical chemistry from the University of Washington in 1982. After a Miller Fellowship at Berkeley, he joined the faculty in the Departure of Chemistry at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1984-1993). Professor Phillips went to the University of Illinois Department of Physics in 1993. He is the recipient of the Edward A. Bouchet Award of the American Physical Society (2000), Beckman Associate at Center for Advanced Study (1999), Senior Xerox Faculty Research Award (1998), Miller Postdoctoral Fellowship at University of California, Berkeley (1981-4). He is the author of numerous scientific papers. This is his first book.
